Slip ring motors
Features
The key feature of slip ring motors is the ability to vary the rotor resistance during operation. This is achieved by means of slip rings and brushes that connect the rotor to external resistors. The advantage of this design is particularly evident during start-up: the motor can generate a high starting torque without requiring excessive starting current. This property makes it ideal for use under special conditions where a smooth and controlled start-up phase is essential, such as in conveyor systems. In addition, the adaptability of the rotor resistance enables a flexible response to different load requirements, thus contributing to increased efficiency in industrial processes.
Applications
Slip ring motors are used in a wide range of applications, especially those that place high demands on starting behaviour and torque. Typical areas of application are heavy machinery and equipment such as cranes, lifts, conveyor systems and mills, where the motors have to withstand high mechanical loads. Their ability to generate high starting torques with low starting currents also makes them suitable for applications that require precise control and smooth acceleration, such as pumps, fans or compressors. In addition, slip ring motors are used in industrial plants where flexible adaptation of the motor to different load conditions is necessary to achieve optimum performance.
Our range of services
Slip ring motors are still used in many industrial sectors. With their properties, they largely determine the effectiveness of production. With VEM three-phase motors with slip ring rotors, the advantages of this drive solution are combined with VEM's exceptional know-how in their production.
Due to their wide range of modifications, the motors can be optimally tailored to customer applications; they are particularly suitable for heavy starts, especially on unstable networks.
