High-speed motor
VEM's high-speed motors are designed for use in high-speed applications where conventional drive solutions such as geared motors or turbines reach their limits. These electric machines operate at rated speeds above 3,600 rpm and offer a powerful, compact, and low-maintenance alternative to more complex mechanical systems. Combined with frequency-controlled control, they enable direct, low-loss power transmission – clean, efficient, and "Made in Germany."
Features
VEM high-speed motors are available in two cooling types: the air-cooled models (IC416) are available in a compact gray cast iron design (sizes 112–450 mm) and are offered with laminated rotors and ball or sleeve bearings. For higher power outputs, water-cooled versions (IC86W) with welded steel housings (sizes 315–900 mm) are used. These can be equipped with either laminated or solid rotors, as well as with sleeve or magnetic bearings.
High-speed motors with solid rotors are specially designed for the highest speeds and maximum power ranges. They are primarily used in applications requiring extreme efficiency and stability.
All versions are IP55 rated as standard and require minimal maintenance thanks to their sophisticated design. The solid design enables smooth running even at extreme speeds, while the absence of a gearbox reduces system losses, installation space, and maintenance costs.
Applications
VEM high-speed motors are ideal for applications requiring high speeds combined with a compact design. Typical areas of application include high-speed compressors, turbo compressors, pumps, spindle drives, industrial fans, and special applications in the process industry. They are increasingly replacing traditional geared motor solutions or even steam and gas turbines, for example, in the energy, chemical, or oil and gas industries. Thanks to their direct drive technology, low maintenance requirements, and excellent energy efficiency, they make an important contribution to CO2 reduction and lower operating costs.
Our range of services
High-Speed Motors (Air-Cooled - IC416)
The high-speed motors with IC416 cooling type are the ideal solution for compact, high-speed applications in the low to medium power range. With power ratings from 10 to 1,050 kW and speeds up to 13,500 rpm, they impress with their space-saving design, air cooling (IC416), and low-maintenance ball bearings. The robust cast iron housing ensures a long service life, while precise speed control via frequency converter enables maximum precision – perfect for applications such as high-performance pumps, spindles, or fans in industrial processes.
High-Performance High-Speed Motors (Water-Cooled - IC86W, Laminated or Solid Rotor)
These high-speed motors with solid rotors represent uncompromising performance in the megawatt range. With speeds of up to 30,000 rpm and a peak power of up to 50 MW, they replace conventional gear solutions or turbines – for example, in compressors, large pumps, or turbochargers. Their welded steel housing, combined with high-performance bearings (plain or magnetic bearings) and water cooling (IC86W), enables stable and low-vibration operation – even under the highest thermal and mechanical loads. Ideal for industries where performance, precision, and efficiency make the difference.
