Slip ring motors
Slip ring motors are a special type of asynchronous motor that is characterized by its special design. In contrast to common squirrel cage motors, slip ring motors have a rotor that is connected to external resistors via slip rings and brushes. This design allows variable adjustment of the rotor resistance during operation, which is particularly advantageous when starting the motor. This allows slip ring motors to produce high starting torques with lower starting current, making them ideal for applications that require a smooth and controlled starting phase. Typical areas of application include heavy machinery such as cranes, elevators, conveyor systems and mills, where the motors have to withstand high mechanical loads. The ability to adjust rotor resistance also provides the ability to tailor motor operation to specific load requirements, ensuring greater flexibility and efficiency in industrial processes.
Features
Slip ring motors are characterized by their special design, which gives them unique properties. In contrast to conventional asynchronous motors, slip ring motors have a rotor that is connected to external resistors via slip rings and brushes. This allows variable adjustment of the rotor resistance during operation, especially during startup. This allows them to generate high starting torques without requiring a high starting current. This property makes them particularly suitable for applications that require a gentle and controlled start-up phase. In addition, slip ring motors offer greater flexibility in adapting to specific load requirements and can thus improve the efficiency of industrial processes.
Applications
Slip ring motors are used in a variety of applications, especially those that place high demands on starting behavior and torque. Typical areas of application are heavy machines and systems such as cranes, elevators, conveyor systems and mills, where the motors have to withstand high mechanical loads. Their ability to produce high starting torques with low starting current also makes them suitable for applications where precise control and smooth acceleration are required, such as in pumps, fans or compressors. In addition, slip ring motors are used in industrial systems where flexible adaptation of the motor to different load conditions is required to achieve optimal performance.
Our range of services
Slip ring motors are still used in many industrial sectors. With their properties, they largely determine the effectiveness of production. With VEM three-phase motors with slip ring rotors, the advantages of this drive solution are combined with VEM's exceptional know-how in their production.
Due to their wide range of modifications, the motors can be optimally tailored to customer applications; they are particularly suitable for heavy starts, especially on unstable networks.
